Helpful tips for choosing the right painter.

by Shane Mahoney & Vince Piliero, two members of the Finer Edge Production Team

How long has the company been in business? Anyone with a ladder can claim to be a painter. A company that has years of experience tends to prove a real commitment to quality work and lasting customer satisfaction. (Finer Edge has been serving Toronto and the GTA for more than 20 years!)

What about the details? Does the estimate include surface preparation and priming? Have you confirmed the type and brand of paint, and the number of coats? For exterior work, insist that the painter protects plants around your home. When it comes to interior work, what will be done to protect your furniture and other precious possessions?

Have you got a commitment on timing? When will the painting start and finish? How many painters will be working on the job? Is the painter willing to ensure that the job will be finished on time?

Will the company commit to its estimate? A knowledgeable estimator will be able to give you an estimate that they’ll stick to. Beware of operations that promise a surprisingly low price. Chances are, they’ll be asking for more money as the job progresses.

What kind of materials will the painter be using? Beware of estimates that are too good to be true. The painter is probably saving money by using inferior paint and materials. Demand the best – it’s definitely worth it in the long run.

What’s the guarantee? And if the work doesn’t hold up during that time, what is the painter willing to do to make you a happy customer? Most guarantees out there are one to two years. Finer Edge offers an industry leading three years.

Are they insured? A fully insured painter ensures you won’t be held responsible for property damage or for personal injury that may happen while painters are working at your home or business. Finer Edge is fully covered for property damage, plus personal injury under WSIB (Workplace Safety and Insurance Board of Ontario).

Have you asked for referrals? It may seem like a pain, but contacting the painter’s previous customers is a smart thing to do. Don’t be satisfied with getting one or two names - a reputable company will be willing to provide you dozens. Finer Edge can offer you thousands. Just ask.

Are the owners involved in the business? It’s good to know that the founders of the company are ensuring, on a day-to-day basis, that promises are being met. By calling Finer Edge, you’ll have either Bill or Gord - our owners - provide you with a quote.
